Quadripoints

A quadripoint is a point in the world where 4 borderlines meet. Those lines don't have to be from 4 different countrys. Actually it can't be 4 different countrylines because such place doesn't exist anymore on earth.

It did exist until 1920 at Vaals (Nl), where borders of Belgium, Germany, Netherlands and neutral Moresnet met.

Enclave H2 + H4
the quadripoint

In the set of enclaves there are only 2 enclaves that share a point. Two Dutch parts lie on the other sides of the point. There are only 2 of these points in the world. The other is on Mt. Sorgschrofen near the Austrian enclave in Germany, Jungholz.

It is actually impossible to get from one area to another without passing this point.

Although not a quadripoint of 4 countries, it is a quadripoint of 2 countries, with 4 different areas. A quadripoint of 4 countries existed in Vaals (Nl) until approximately 1920.

Enclave H2:

Once again we visit the quadripoint, of which there are only 2 in the world that share such a point with countries. In the USA there is also the 4-corner. There, 4 states share 1 point.
The other quadripoint is at Jungholz on Mt. Sorgschrofen. Jungholz is an Austrian enclave in Germany.

Jungholz is an Austrian exclave inside Germany.

Besides it's an enclave, it also contains a quadripoint, where Austria and Gemany each others borders cross.

That quadripoint we'll find at mountain 'Sorgschrofen' at 1.635 mtr. altitude.

On the 27th of may 2024 we went up. While the skilift wasn't open, we had to walk from the beginning, however, I did a little hitchhike ;) (I guess for 50 mtrs).

The hike was easy until the last 200 mtrs.
Every warning wasn't 1 too much.

Jungholz

The Sorgschrofen is a 1635 meter high mountain in the Allgäu Alps. A secondary peak of the Sorgschrofen is the Zinken (1613 m).
The summit is the only land connection between the municipality of Jungholz, which is part of the Austrian state, and the rest of the state of Tyrol. Since the border treaty between Bavaria and Austria of 1844 and a supplementary treaty of 1850, the summit of the Sorgschrofen has had the rare peculiarity that four border lines from each of two German and Austrian municipalities meet in a quasi-quadrilateral corner:

Bad Hindelang (West, Germany)
Pfronten (East, Germany)
Jungholz (northern, Austrian functional enclave)
Schattwald (south, Austria). But let's not forget the Sorgschrofen is a real quadripoint, the borders of At + De+At+De do meet here. It's 1 of the 2 quadripoints in the world. The other we find in Baarle.

Crossing the ridge to the main summit is reserved for experienced mountain hikers who are absolutely determined and free from dizziness, as the path is marked and partly secured with ropes, but often very exposed. The climb can be icy well into spring.

During a campertour from Denver to Salt Lake City, where we also met Dutch friends, we visited the quadpoint 'Four Corners', the only place in the USA where 4 US States meet each other.

Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona does meet here.
